Len Artists #278: Unique

Unique is the quality of being unlike anything else. For this Unique theme, I’ll begin with the uniqueness of nature.

Ginkgo is one of the oldest living tree species. I was surprised to learn that it dated back between 270 to 290 million years and can live to 1,000 years and grow to a height of 120 feet.

According to webmd.com, “It seems to improve blood circulation, and might also act as an antioxidant to slow down changes in the brain.”

Before I read about Ginkgo, I was attracted by the unique fan shaped Ginkgo leaves.

Chrysanthemum has a long history. It was first introduced to Japan from China in the 5th century, and has been used for medicinal and culinary purposes since ancient times.

I learned from Nippon.com that there are more than 350 types of chrysanthemums in Japan, some of the 200,000 varieties said to exist in the world. This beautiful flower symbolizes longevity, rejuvenation and nobility. The uniqueness of this flower is said that it blooms after all the flowers are faded in late fall.

Japanese use unique techniques to grow, care, maintain, and preserve trees. The pine tree on the left below is more than 300 hundred years old, located in Tokyo.

It’s a commitment for them, no matter how long it takes.

Now, we can explore many photography techniques to create different photo results. I think the Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) is one of the unique features to play with. I often don’t know the result of my ICM photo until I open it on my laptop.

Turning an image into a painting-like photo using Topaz is really cool. Just a few clicks, here you have it. 🙂

Last but not the least, I still remember, after a long hiking, when this stunning sight of the Rainbow Bridge in Utah appeared in front of us. With a span of 275 feet (84 m) and height of 290 feet (88 m), it is one of the largest natural arches in the world. Americans who have long held the bridge sacred. Ancient Pueblo People were followed much later by Paiute and Navajo groups who named the bridge Nonnezoshe — “rainbow turned to stone.” Click here for more.
