Cruising through the Lake Powell

Lake Powell is the largest man-made lake in North America. Through the boating and a hiking trip (to the Rainbow Bridge), we saw the vast landscape that contains rugged water- and wind-carved canyons.

Colorado River and its many tributaries carve through the Colorado Plateau to form a this massive dynamic landscape, some of the most breathtaking scenery on the lake.

Then, it went through the deep, 15-mile-long, narrow gorge, which provides the spectacular views of the canyon walls.

 

 From here, we hiked up to the Rainbow Bridge.

It was cloudy and cooler in the morning. The clouds were gradually breaking up in the afternoon.

This special patina takes centuries to form, and is in a constant state of change.

Our cruise tour guide told a story of a houseboat parked somewhere by the Lake Powell Resort. This unique boat is owned by the owner of a waste management company. He spent 15 million dollars to build this luxurious houseboat he wanted, and on top of that, he put 5 million dollars for the electrical power and water sewer system. According to our tour guide, the owner has showed up there no more than a few times in many years.

Kenneth Grahame, the author of the Wind in the Willows, didn’t need a luxurious houseboat to enjoy the river and canyons.
