The Great Wall

Like a gigantic dragon, the Great Wall winds up and down across deserts, villages, mountains/plateaus, stretching approximately 8,851.8 kilometers (5,500 miles) from east to west of northern China.

The Great Wall was listed as a World Heritage by UNESCO in 1987.  The photo below is from Wikipedia:

Notes:

Sections of walls were built as early as the Warring States Period (476 BC – 221 BC); a massive construction began in Qin Dynasty (220-206BC); it, then, was reconstructed during the Ming Dynasty (1368 to 1644). The Great wall had defended the country for more than 2000 years.

There are more than 10,000 watchtowers and beacon towers on the Great Wall. They were used to house troops and store weapons. Tower watchers were stationed there to send signals when they saw intruders.

Both Retireediary and CanadianTravelBugs chose the Great Wall for this challenge theme, I’d like to add my vote to it. See more entries in WPC
