“I dare to be different.” — Anna Kiesenhofer
Anna Kiesenhofer won Olympic gold medal–Austria’s 1st cycling medal since 1896. She emerged as a dark horse, going solo for the last 40 kilometers when she started “riding for gold.” Anna earned a master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Cambridge, England and a PhD in applied mathematics from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Barcelona. Kiesenhofer meticulously plans her own training, nutrition and race strategy.

“She (Lydia Jacoby) practically swims in iced-over lakes in Alaska”
Seventeen-year-old Lydia Jacoby won the gold medal for the Women’s 100m Breaststroke Final. “She practically swims in iced-over lakes in Alaska,” teammate Gunnar Bentz said. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she took about 2 1/2 hour train to Anchorage to practice swimming.

“This is such a surreal moment.” — Suni Lee
Suni Lee is an 18-year-old high school graduate. As a young girl, the budding athlete practiced on a wooden balance beam her father built for her. She’s been marred by injuries, lost an aunt and uncle to Covid-19 and grappled with a horrific accident that left her father paralyzed. When she came back, she dedicated her gold medal to her father who “deserves it as much as I do'” and placed her silver medal around her mom’s neck

“At the end of the day, we’re human, too, so we have to protect our mind and our body rather than just go out there and do what the world wants us to do,” — Simone Biles.
Simone Biles is the tenth female gymnast and first American female gymnast to win a World medal on every event, and the first female gymnast since Daniela Silivaș in 1988 to win a medal on every event at a single Olympic Games or World Championships.
With a combined total of 32 Olympic and World Championship medals, Biles is tied with Larisa Latynina as the most decorated gymnast of all time. .
