A Small Welsh Town with a Big Welsh Name (09/30/2019)
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch is a small, quiet town on the Island of Anglesey off the northwest coast of North Wales, famous for having the longest place name in an English-speaking country.
33 miles west of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch is the South Stack Lighthouse. The South Stack Lighthouse is built on the summit of a small island off the north-west coast of Holy Island, Anglesey, Wales. It was built in 1809 to warn ships of the dangerous rocks below.
Google translate in Welsh took 6 seconds to say this name, I think the natives of this place will never have public speaking anxiety. Just ask them the name of their town and they will break the nervousness barrier with the answer 😉
A part of my job was on Anglesea. in Holyhead. And all the people I met there now how to say this! Still, it’s not the longest name – Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu .. New Zealand.
When I was still teaching English in Germany, I tried – with the help of a pronouncing dictionary – to read that name to my students and nearly broke my tongue. 😉
Oh, my, goodness…that’s a name that spell-checks would never get right and cutting and pasting it after typing it once would be a must for me! Great photos.
I seem to recall there is a song by Stephen Sondheim that has this town’s name in it. And in thsi song there is also another town with an excessively long name. I will ahve to look it up now!
There are so many Welsh towns with long, constant-heavy names, but this one takes the cake. Imagine as a child having to learn how to spell your hometown name when it looks like this!!
gogogoch… sounds like they want to say, “Go, go, you’re near the end of the name!” 😀

6 second… it may take me 6 months to learn, and I probably still won’t be able to pronounce it correctly. 😊

That was my question!
I go it from the cruise. The captain even slowed down the ship to let us enjoy the view and take pictures. 🙂

Try to spell that name to a foreigner 😂. Great photo of the light house, thanks to God they gave it a much shorter name.

Such a pretty place but oh my to that name! I suppose having the longest name brings tourists and that is clever indeed.

I couldn’t believe it was a name of a town. It must be difficult for little kids to spell.

My English parents went on a driving holiday through Wales and they would agree with that. It’s never what you think.
