Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #45: Street Art
This week Patti gives us an opportunity to show our street art discoveries.
The 1980s could be summarized as the “Jekyll and Hyde” period of the subway system. As the decade began, it had the filthiest trains, the craziest graffiti, the noisiest wheels, and the weirdest passengers. By the end of the decade, it had cleaner trains, … —New York Transit History
Today, these subway art installations allowing riders to enjoy various creative art works in many subway stations.
This glass mosaic weaves its way along more than 100 feet of undulating wall. It suggests an alternate universe unrestricted by time and space:
Riders can also enjoy subway art inside of a train:
Some tell culture and fun stories of the city:
Elizabeth Murray’s “Stream” brings an otherwise long and barren hallway to life. The bright reds, blues, oranges and yellows are meant to energize riders as they go about their daily commutes.
“The message of โI Amsterdamโ is that we are all individuals in the city. We want to show something different: diversity, tolerance, solidarity.โ said city councilor Femke Roosma. But, it has been removed from the city center to reduce the tour traffic.

To me, the bicycle parking in Amsterdam looks like a unique street art display. ๐

The street art is life giving – that sounded nice to read
– and of course to see the colors –
The bikes do look like art- and you know – that many bikes really speaks a lot about the culture of the city!

Making me homesick with that mural from the 14th Street Subway Station in NYC. The colorful subway cars were not there last time I was home so I have something to look forward to when I return. Delightful to revisit the streets of Amsterdam through your lens. I started my circumnavigation from that beautiful city

You demonstrated with the bicycles how street art can be found almost anywhere! The subway murals and art are very distinctive. Isn’t it wonderful that artists have the opportunity to express themselves in such a grand ad public way! ๐

Amy, these are terrific!! I never thought about using subway art for this one – a perfect idea for a response. I ride the NYC subway whenever we’re there to visit our kids and am amazed by the beautiful mosaic art down there. I’ve often thought of riding one day and getting off at each interesting stop to photograph the art. Now I’m more motivated than ever!

Thank you so much, Tina. I really enjoyed these subway art, but hubby wasn’t too excited, so I had to click quickly with my iPhone. I think getting off at each interesting stop to photograph the art would be a fun project. ๐ ๐

I love this, Amy. A great post. Your shots of subway art are perfect for the challenge. I like how you included bicycles as street art in Amsterdam, a city we love. I had no idea that the I am Amsterdam sign was taken down! It was hugely popular. I wonder why the city council objected to so many selfies!! Your quote about the subways in the 80’s sums up that decade. ๐ ๐

Thank you, Patti! There are many subway art displays in NYC, nice to spend time to take some photos, and on the train. ๐ If I remember correctly, it was in Dec. when they moved the Amsterdam sign. I was very surprised…
