Clouds wanting to lift and the sun wanting to rise (Part 2)

“Beneath a Scarlet Sky: A Novel” by Mark Sullivan is another book I read recently.

Part 2

When Pino and Anna fell in love with each other, Pino had a chance to take Anna to his favorite Lake Como. There, they could enjoy the beautiful view and a peaceful time for a little while.

And, Pino could share his dreams for the future with Anna.

“Pino remembered Anna telling him that she didn’t believe much in the future, that she tried to live moment by moment, looking for reasons to be grateful, trying to create her own happiness and grace, and to use them as a means to a good life in the present and not a goal to be achieved some other day.” Anna was in her mid 20s.

Pino had a different role during the last year of the wartime in Milan, that indeed changed his life forever. When the war was over, Pino was unsettled and began his own inner battles. He had too many unanswered questions. Anna and his love for her haunted him the rest of his life.

Seven decades later, he was there by the lakeshore, “gazed north then across the lake to his beloved Alps, rising like impossible cathedrals in the summer air…”

‘Then at last he took off his glasses the sun was setting, casting the lake in coppers and golds. He wiped away tears and put his glasses back on…. “Forgive an old man his memories,” Pino said, “Some loves never die.” ‘ He was 89 years old.

All photos were taken in Dolomite, Alps, Ligurian coast, and Lake Como with my Sony powershot. These places were mentioned through the book. The sunset photo (above) was taken from the patio of our hotel room in Lake Como. We sat there the entire evening, and I took only one shot.

We loved the lakes and Alps. For some years, we couldn’t think of another place to spend our vacation, were happy to go back again and again.

One time, we stepped into one of a beautiful small town in Dolomite. After our lunch break, we ran into their annual medieval parade. It started with Italian medieval flag throwing with powerful drum playing. It truly was a special experience, I’ll never forget.

I recall it was pretty challenging for us to hike up there through small towns and villages where no signs around and local people didn’t speak English. Hubby depended on a printed map and his old fashion compass the entire time, we were able to hike up and made to Alpe di Siusi. How hubby located Alpe and these beautiful spots without the Google Map is beyond me.

Thank you for reading. 🙂
