WPC: Masterpiece (2)

Michelangelo greatly admired the East Door of the Baptistery Doors declaring the Gates of Paradise.

Lorenzo Ghiberti (1378 – 1455) was awarded the Baptistery Door commission in 1329; in 1425, he got a second commission for the East Doors of the Baptistery. The door was the largest single piece bronze casting since Roman times. It took Ghiberti 21 years to complete.

Ghiberti’s East Door has ten panels telling the stories from the Old Testament.  Vasari (see note below) considered the Story of Joseph panel was one of the most pictorially complex panels. The round temple in perspective was a special challenge for Ghiberti.

Giorgio Vasari, an Italian painter, architect, writer and historian, was famous for his book entitled “Lives of the Most Eminent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects”.
