The Louvre Pyramid was commissioned by the President of France François Mitterrand in 1984 (completed in 1989); it was designed by I M Pei. Pei is known for using large, abstract forms and sharp, geometric designs.

The large Pyramid contains 678 glass panels (its square base is 115 ft and high 70 ft). It serves as the main entrance to the Louvre Museum. Prior to the Pyramid, Louvre had at least three different entrances.
