Enchanted Rock is a huge, pink granite exfoliation dome, it rises 425 feet above ground, 1,825 feet above sea level, and covers 640 acres. It is one of the largest batholiths (underground rock formation uncovered by erosion) in the US, according to Texas State Parks.

Overtime, soil builds up in weathering pits and eventually vibrant and diverse ecosystem emerges. Though no one really knows who named the granite dome, but people believed that the name was from its magical glittering shine seen at night.

The park has limited parking space for visitors. During holidays and weekends, the parking quickly fills to capacity, then it is one-car-out and one-car-in. It was a sunny and warm weekend, we waited almost one hour to get in; later in the afternoon, visitors had to wait over two hours.

My heart feels lighter, my mind feels calmer, and my senses feel tuned whenever I see that giant pink rock on the horizon. No matter how I choose to spend my time among the enchanted rocks of the park I always leave feeling better than when I arrived        – M. Twyman, Enchanted Rock visitor and climber

  7. Loved the pictures, Amy, of a place I always wanted to go to but never made it. By the way, we at he’d the San Antonio auditions of American Idol this week that were held at Sunset Station. The pictures of our dear city made hubby and me a little sad. Oh, how we miss that place!

To protect the environment of the rock, the State Park doesn’t try to publicize it, nor make any effort to make it easy for visitors to get in.
